Ordering Recommendation: Second-trimester screening test for fetal risk of trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), trisomy 18 (Edwards), and open neural tube defects (ONTD, spina bifida).
Patient Preparation: Specimen must be drawn between 14 weeks, 0 days and 24 weeks, 6 days gestation. The recommended time for maternal serum screening is 16 to 18 weeks gestation.

Outside Laboratories:
- Centrifuge sample and transfer 3 mL (1 mL min) serum to a separate plastic vial. Serum must be separated from cells within 2 hours of collection. Refrigerate serum.
- Submit a completed ARUP Maternal Serum Testing Patient History Form along with the DLMP requisition.* Failure to provide the mandatory information may result in test delays.

Stability (after separation from cells): Refrigerated (preferred): 2 weeks; Frozen: 1 year (avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles); Ambient: 72 hours.
Unacceptable Conditions: Plasma, hemolyzed specimens.
