Patient Preparation:

1. Patient should empty bladder.
2. Have patient drink at least 0.5 liters of water.
3. Within 1 hour, collect a random urine specimen.
4. Forward to the laboratory immediately.

Handling Instructions

Outside Laboratories: Add 1M NaOH as preservative to random urine collection within 2 hours of collection. This preservative is intended to achieve a pH of between approximately 6 and 8. Freeze specimen at -20°C.

Stability: Frozen (preferred): 14 days; Refrigerated: 48 hours; Ambient: Unacceptable.

Reject Due To: Specimen with pH <6.

Receiving Instructions

SPS: Decant in Sunquest to create an aliquot CID label, transfer urine to a screw-cap plastic vial, and forward the aliquot to the Chemistry manual bench as soon as possible. The pH of the specimen must be adjusted within 2 hours of collection.

Chemistry:

• Add 1 M NaOH to achieve specimen pH of between 6 and 8.
• Freeze urine at -20°C (place in Sendouts Frozen Rack).
