Ordering Recommendation: May aid in the diagnosis of chikungunya viral infection during acute phase of disease (>5 days after symptom onset). Testing should also be considered for other arthropod-borne viruses with similar symptomology based on clinical presentation and travel history.
Collection Note: Parallel testing is preferred and convalescent specimens must be received within 30 days from receipt of the acute specimens. Specimens must be plainly marked as "acute" or "convalescent."

Outside Laboratories: Centrifuge sample and transfer serum/plasma to a separate plastic vial within 2 hours of collection. Refrigerate serum/plasma.
Stability: Refrigerated (preferred): 2 weeks; Frozen: 1 year; Ambient: 48 hours. Avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles.
Unacceptable Conditions: Contaminated, heat-inactivated, hemolyzed, or severely lipemic specimens.
